COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. — Mary Rebecca “Becky” Hill, the former Clerk of Court for Colleton County who oversaw the sensational Alex Murdaugh double-murder trial, was arrested on Wednesday and is now facing multiple felony charges as new layers of scrutiny mount in her ongoing legal saga.
Hill, 57, was booked on May 14, 2025, and is being held for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). According to official detention records, she is facing at least three felony arrest warrants issued by Colleton County, listed under warrant numbers 2025A1510100164, 2025A1510100165, and 2025A1510100166.
Becky Hill, has been charged with three felony counts: two counts of misconduct in office and obstruction of justice. Arrest warrants filed by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) in Colleton County detail that Hill is accused of violating state codes 0819 and 0118. The misconduct charge encompasses alleged acts of malfeasance, misfeasance, or nonfeasance while in office, while the obstruction charge relates to interference with justice. The charges follow months of controversy tied to her role in the high-profile Alex Murdaugh trial.

BREAKING UPDATE: Becky Hill Faces New Perjury Charge in Expanding Criminal Case
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill, already facing felony charges of misconduct in office and obstruction of justice, was hit with a fourth charge Friday afternoon—perjury—as her legal troubles continue to mount in connection with her role during and after the high-profile Alex Murdaugh murder trial.
According to updated records obtained by CC News Network, Hill was formally charged in Richland County under South Carolina Code 16-9-10 with “2377 – Perjury: False Testimony Under Oath.” The charge stems from allegations that Hill knowingly gave false or misleading testimony under oath, possibly related to her public statements and legal filings following Murdaugh’s double-murder conviction in 2023.
This new charge comes on top of the two felony charges filed earlier in Colleton County:
0819 – Misconduct in Office: Accusing Hill of malfeasance, misfeasance, or nonfeasance while serving as Clerk of Court.
0118 – Obstruction of Justice: Alleging she interfered with the judicial process during the Murdaugh trial.

The charges come amid a widening investigation into Hill’s conduct while serving as Clerk of Court. Two sources close to the investigation have confirmed to CC News Network last July that Hill is the subject of a surrogate investigation conducted by the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Lexington, S.C. A surrogate investigation occurs when the South Carolina Attorney General delegates prosecutorial authority to a local solicitor to act on its behalf.
Hill gained national attention during the Murdaugh trial in 2023, later authoring a book about her courtroom experience. However, her post-trial notoriety has been overshadowed by allegations of misconduct, ethics violations, and potential criminal behavior. The South Carolina State Ethics Committee has filed close to 100 allegations against Hill, accusing her of misusing approximately $20,000 in public funds during her tenure. She was scheduled to appear in court on December 19, 2024, but that was postponed.
Under South Carolina law, the misuse of $10,000 or more in public funds is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Any amount between $2,000 and $10,000 is also a felony with a maximum penalty of five years. These charges could subject Hill to over a decade behind bars if convicted. It is important to note that under South Carolina law, all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Should the surrogate investigation proceed to formal prosecution, the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office would need to seek and obtain a grand jury indictment, which would then transition the case into a surrogate prosecution. Despite confirmation of the investigation by two independent sources, the Solicitor’s Office has not issued a public statement on the matter. (UPDATE July 11, 2024: The official referral letter confirming the surrogate investigation was published by FITSNews and can be accessed here.)
Further complicating Hill’s legal issues is the arrest of her son, Jeffrey Colton Hill, on November 21, 2023. Jeffrey Hill, 34, was charged by SLED with wiretapping. According to investigators, while working as an IT director, he intercepted and listened to a private phone conversation on July 20 without consent. A forensic investigation traced the recording to an IP address linked to Hill’s assigned computer.
In addition, Becky Hill is entangled in the ongoing fallout from the Murdaugh trial. She faces serious allegations of jury tampering, with particular attention drawn to juror number 785, also known as the “Egg Lady.” That juror released a book last summer called, Because Enough is Enough, detailing her experiences and alleging that Murdaugh did not receive a fair trial.
