Becky Hill Investigation is Officially Taking Longer than the Warren Commission
By James Seidel, CC News Network
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Becky Hill, the former Colleton County Clerk of Court, who still faces 76 ethics violation charges stemming from her role in the Alex Murdaugh murder trial. Originally scheduled for a December 19, 2024, hearing, the South Carolina Ethics Commission has postponed the case indefinitely due to an ongoing criminal investigation by the Attorney General’s Office. This delay, requested by Hill’s legal team and approved without objection, raises serious concerns about the pace of accountability in South Carolina’s judicial system.
How Long Will This Take? The Warren Commission Comparison
To put the Becky Hill investigation’s delay into perspective, it is important to note that the Warren Commission, which investigated the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, completed its work and released an 888-page final report in less than 10 months. By contrast, Becky Hill’s ethics case and criminal probe have dragged on for over a year, with no resolution in sight. Meanwhile, the State’s response to Alex Murdaugh’s defense brief has also been delayed after Attorney General Alan Wilson’s office requested a 90-day extension, citing the complexity of the case. What is going on in the A.G.’s office? It took that office less than a day to respond to Congresswoman Nancy Mace‘s accusations of Wilson’s office.
What Exactly Is Hill Really Facing?
As of today, multiple investigations surround Becky Hill and her son, Jeffrey “Colt” Hill. Here’s a breakdown of the ongoing legal battles:
1. Jury Tampering Allegations
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) may be investigating claims that Hill influenced jurors during the Murdaugh trial. Former juror Myra Crosby, who was dismissed from the case, alleges that Hill pressured the jury to convict Murdaugh quickly and warned jurors not to trust him.
The alleged jury tampering claims mirror the arguments being used in Murdaugh’s defense appeal, in which his attorneys are challenging the legitimacy of his conviction. The Supreme Court is now weighing whether jury misconduct, prosecutorial overreach, and unreliable forensic evidence warrant a new trial.
2. Financial Misconduct and Ethics Violations of Becky Hill
The State Ethics Commission (SCSEC) has filed a 25-page complaint accusing Hill of financial misconduct and abuse of power. Specific allegations include:
- Writing unauthorized bonus checks from child support funds.
- Using county money for personal gifts, meals, and office parties.
- Reimbursing herself for prosecutors’ meals during the trial.
- Misleading the finance department about employee work hours.
- Arranging a staged photo of Alex Murdaugh in a holding cell for her book.
These accusations align with Murdaugh’s defense team’s claims that Becky Hill may have allegedly been more interested in profiting from the trial than ensuring justice.
3. Plagiarism in Her Book
Hill’s book, Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders, was found to contain plagiarized sections from a BBC article. These allegations add to the controversy surrounding her financial and ethical misconduct.
4. Wiretapping Allegations Against Her Son
Becky Hill’s son, Colt Hill, is facing criminal wiretapping charges after allegedly intercepting communications of a county employee. The incident is under SLED investigation and could result in additional legal consequences for the Hill family.
Attorney General’s Office and Prosecutorial Delays
It was the CC News network that broke the story that South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has appointed 11th Circuit Solicitor Rick Hubbard to assist with the investigation. However, the lack of movement in the case has raised concerns about transparency and accountability.
At the same time, Wilson’s office has also delayed its response to Murdaugh’s defense brief, filing a 90-day extension request on January 9, 2025. The defense has argued that key aspects of the trial—including unreliable forensic evidence, the overuse of Murdaugh’s financial crimes as motive, and improper jury influence—should result in a new trial. Should Murdaugh’s conviction be overturned, scrutiny will shift directly to Becky Hill and her role in potentially compromising the trial. As well as those responsible for the debunked anonymous email to Judge Newman. Those who participated in that scheme to tamper with the jury will see prison time, says a source close to the investigation.
Resignation and Fallout
On March 25, 2024, Becky Hill resigned as Clerk of Court, citing a desire to spend more time with family. She appeared alongside her attorney, Justin Bamberg, and newly elected Clerk of Court Gary Hale in front of the Colleton County Courthouse to announce her departure. However, critics argue that her resignation was a calculated move to avoid further scrutiny.

Final Thoughts: A Justice System in Limbo
With Hill’s ethics case stalled, Murdaugh’s appeal in motion, and the State requesting extensions, Fentanyl overdoes and drug busts, South Carolina’s justice system is now in the spotlight for its slow response to corruption and potential misconduct.
But the state’s justice system sure can execute people quickly and respond to Congressional accusations extremely fast.
If the Warren Commission could complete its investigation into JFK’s assassination in less than a year, why is a single clerk of court ethics violations and a potential retrial dragging on indefinitely? Is it because if they indict Hill on jury tampering charges, it will make Murdaugh’s appeal to the State Supreme Court that much easier to overturn? If that’s the case, then the SC justice system isn’t about getting justice correct. It’s about getting “their” justice they want. However, the public wants an equitable distribution of justice, not the “good ole boy” network of getting who they want versus getting who is responsible. I know a podcaster who hates the good ole boy network but will never concede to fairness when it comes to anything Murdaugh.
I’m not even going to get into the fact that the State couldn’t get an indictment today with the real facts, and not their lie, mistake or major abuse of power of for the high velocity spatter t-shirt fiasco. We’ll leave it at that.
If both cases ever develop, CC News Network will provide live updates on these high-profile legal battles. Stay tuned for breaking developments, if they ever happen in Hill’s case.
