A CC News Exclusive and First to Report: Former SC Court Clerk Becky Hill Faces 76 Ethics Violations in Murdaugh Trial Fallout, the Case Put on Hold
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The CC News Network is first reporting that Becky Hill, the former Colleton County Clerk of Court whose conduct during the high-profile Alex Murdaugh murder trial stirred controversy, now faces 76 ethics violation charges. Originally scheduled for a December 19, 2024, hearing, the South Carolina Ethics Commission has agreed to hold Hill’s case “in abeyance” due to a pending criminal investigation by the Attorney General’s Office. This delay was requested by Hill’s counsel and approved by the Ethics Commission, with no objections from the Commission’s staff. The ethics case will remain on hold until the criminal investigation concludes.
Becky Hill Ethics Committee Hearing – Officially PostponedThe burning question that everyone is asking is, what is going on with the Hill family investigations? As of current count today, there are many and we will try and layout for you what charges Becky and her son Colt Hill have pending or are being investigated.
-
Jury tamperingThe South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating allegations that Hill tampered with the jury during the trial of Alex Murdaugh. Murdaugh’s attorneys claim that Hill told jurors not to trust Murdaugh and pressured them to reach a quick verdict. Myra Crosy, a juror on the trial, confirms this allegation.
-
Personal gain
SLED is also investigating allegations that Hill used her position for personal gain. This includes:
- Writing herself thousands of dollars in bonus checks from a child support account
- Reimbursing herself for gifts and lunches for courthouse staff
- Buying lunches for prosecutors and then paying herself back with county money
-
Ethics violations
The State Ethics Commission (SCSEC) is investigating allegations that Hill violated ethics rules. This includes:
- Giving false information to the finance department about how much employees worked on child support
-
PlagiarismHill was exposed for plagiarizing parts of her book, Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders, from an article in the BBC.
-
WiretappingSLED is investigating allegations that Becky Hill’s son, Colt Hill allegedly wiretapped another county employee at the request of the employee’s mother.
The State Ethics Commission charges stem from allegations of financial misconduct and misuse of office. The 25-page complaint accuses Hill of using county resources for personal gain and exploiting her role in the Murdaugh trial to promote a book. Specific allegations include arranging a photo of Murdaugh in a holding cell for the book, granting herself unauthorized bonuses, and misappropriating county funds for meals, gifts, and parties.
In addition to the ethics inquiry, Hill is under criminal investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for alleged jury tampering during Murdaugh’s trial. Former juror Myra Crosby, who was dismissed during the trial, stated she has not been contacted by investigators, raising concerns about the thoroughness of the inquiry. Crosby, who has since written a book, Because Enough is Enough alleges Hill attempted to influence the jury and Crosby questions Hill’s motives throughout the trial.
Attorney General Alan Wilson recently appointed 11th Circuit Solicitor Rick Hubbard to provide prosecutorial assistance in Hill’s investigation. While progress on the case has been slow, the AG’s office has stated it is proceeding with “due diligence.”
Hill, who resigned as Clerk of Court on March 25th, citing she was going to spend more time with family, is also dealing with legal troubles involving her son, Jeffrey Colton Hill, who faces wiretapping charges. Hill appeared alongside her attorney, Justin Bamberg, in front of the Colleton County Courthouse to announce her immediate resignation from her current position, which she held since 2020. She’s pictured with newly elected Clerk of Court, Mr. Gary Hale, in the red tie.
The South Carolina Ethics Committee hearing for Hill will remain on hold, pending resolution of the ongoing criminal investigation. CC News Network will continue to provide live updates as this case unfolds. Stay tuned for the latest developments in this high-profile legal battle.
