Coastal Carolina Prepares for Myrtle Beach Bowl with Fresh Faces Leading the Charge
CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina head coach Tim Beck is embracing a new chapter for the Chanticleers as they prepare for the Myrtle Beach Bowl on December 23, 2024. For Beck and his team, the bowl game represents an opportunity not only to end the season on a high note but also to showcase fresh talent, including redshirt freshman quarterback Tad Hudson, who is set to make his first career start as a D1 college quarterback.

Excitement Builds as Hudson Steps Up
At a Thursday press conference, Coach Beck expressed optimism about the upcoming game and the chance for younger players to take center stage.
“There’s a lot of excitement at practice because there are a lot of guys that haven’t played much, but now they know they’re going to,” Beck said. One of those players is Hudson, who has been patiently waiting for his moment.
“He’s been waiting in the shadows,” Beck said of Hudson. “He had a very successful high school career in North Carolina, where he threw for 7,325 yards and 76 TDs during his four-year prep career Hough High School, which were both school records .” With Hudson leading the Chanticleers in the Myrtle Beach Bowl, fans are eager to see how the young quarterback performs under the spotlight.
A Four-Star Talent
Hudson’s high school accolades speak volumes about his potential. Rated as a four-star prospect, Hudson ranked No. 146 nationally in the ESPN 300 and was named the 10th-best pocket passer in the country. ESPN also recognized him as the No. 3 player in the state of North Carolina, solidifying his reputation as a standout talent.
A Record-Breaking High School Career
Hudson’s leadership and ability to perform under pressure were evident during his time as a three-year starter and team captain. He compiled a 33-5 record as the starting quarterback, setting school records for career passing yards (7,325) and touchdown passes (76).
- Senior Season: 2,599 passing yards and 22 touchdowns
- Junior Season: 2,601 passing yards and 30 touchdowns
- Sophomore Season: 1,549 passing yards and 16 touchdowns in nine games
These statistics reflect not only Hudson’s consistency but also his ability to adapt and excel against high-level competition.

The Impact of the Transfer Portal
Hudson’s debut comes amid significant roster changes, as Coastal’s two top quarterbacks, Ethan Vasko and Noah Kim, recently entered the transfer portal. Their departures reflect a growing challenge in college football that Beck referred to as “free agency.”
“It’s extremely frustrating,” Beck admitted. “One of the things that’s changing in the landscape of college football: you’re not building a program anymore. This isn’t a program. Each year, you just build a team.”
Beck’s comments highlight the difficulties faced by college programs nationwide as they attempt to maintain consistency while navigating the ever-changing dynamics of the transfer portal.
A Fresh Opportunity
Despite these challenges, Beck is optimistic about what the Myrtle Beach Bowl represents for Coastal Carolina’s future. Younger players, including Hudson, will have a chance to prove themselves and gain valuable experience against a formidable opponent in UTSA.
“There’s no better stage than a bowl game to show what these guys can do,” Beck said. “We’re excited to see how they respond.”
