LANCASTER, S.C. – A tragic scene unfolded in Lancaster County on Sunday afternoon when a man called 911, claiming to have killed a woman and child at a residence on Mosteller Drive. Moments later, he was dead after exchanging gunfire with sheriff’s deputies.
According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the call came in shortly before 12:30 p.m. on March 9. Deputies responded to 542 Mosteller Drive, where they encountered an armed man standing in the yard. A shootout ensued, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inside the home, authorities discovered a woman and a juvenile male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. First responders treated both victims on-site before transporting them to a medical facility. Their conditions remain unknown.
Investigation and Response
A SWAT team, sheriff’s investigators, and South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers secured the area, establishing a perimeter around the home before deputies entered. Authorities have confirmed that no additional suspects are being sought, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
As per standard protocol, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on paid administrative leave, a routine procedure following use-of-force incidents.

Sheriff’s Statement
Sheriff Barry Faile addressed the tragedy, offering condolences to the victims and their loved ones.
“First, our thoughts and prayers are with the family members and friends of those touched by this horrific incident. We pray that this woman and child will survive their injuries.”
Sheriff Faile also acknowledged the difficult situation deputies faced, stating:
“We never want our deputies to be in these situations. They train for these scenarios, and early indications show they acted lawfully and within our policy. We trust SLED to develop all the facts and provide answers for what occurred today.”

Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area around Holiday Road and Mosteller Drive as investigators continue processing the scene.
The names of those involved have not been released, and additional details remain limited as the investigation unfolds.
