Dire Wolves Reborn: Scientists Announce First De-Extinction Births in History

April 8, 2025 — Dallas, TX — In a scientific breakthrough once thought to be science fiction, researchers have announced the birth of three genetically engineered animals that resemble the extinct dire wolf—marking what is believed to be the first successful de-extinction project in history.
The Dire Wolf pups, named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi, were born between October 2024 and January 2025, according to Colossal Biosciences, a biotechnology company specializing in species restoration. Romulus and Remus were born on Oct. 1, 2024, followed by Khaleesi on Jan. 30, 2025.
Colossal’s team utilized ancient DNA recovered from fossilized dire wolf remains, including a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull. Using this genetic blueprint, scientists pinpointed 20 key differences across 14 genes that set the dire wolf (Aenocyon dirus) apart from its modern relatives.
The researchers then used CRISPR gene-editing technology to insert these traits into the DNA of gray wolves. The embryos were implanted into domestic dog surrogates, leading to the birth of the pups—who have white coats, broader skulls, and larger physiques resembling the dire wolf, a species extinct for more than 10,000 years.

“These are not clones,” said Colossal co-founder and CEO Ben Lamm. “They are genetic approximations that express the key traits we believe defined the dire wolf in the late Pleistocene epoch.”
The animals are currently housed in a 2,000-acre secure preserve in the United States, where they are being closely monitored by a team of ecologists, veterinarians, and behaviorists.
Though hailed as a groundbreaking achievement in conservation biology, the project has also sparked an intense ethical and scientific debate.
Critics caution that calling the animals “dire wolves” may be misleading, as their DNA is still predominantly gray wolf, modified to express select ancient traits.
“What we have here are genetically modified gray wolves designed to look like dire wolves—not true de-extinction,” said Dr. Caroline Masters, a molecular biologist at Princeton University. “It’s an incredible achievement, but let’s be clear about what’s being done.”
Colossal, however, argues that their work lays the foundation for more ambitious conservation efforts, including plans to resurrect the woolly mammoth and the dodo bird.
“We believe this is just the beginning,” Lamm said. “De-extinction isn’t just about bringing back the past—it’s about preserving the future.”
Dire wolves went extinct around 10,000 years ago due to a mix of climate change, loss of large prey, and stiff competition from more adaptable predators like gray wolves and humans. As the Ice Age ended, the large animals they hunted—such as mammoths and bison—began to vanish, leaving dire wolves without sufficient food. Unlike gray wolves, dire wolves were larger, slower, and genetically isolated, meaning they couldn’t interbreed or adapt as easily to new environments. Combined with human expansion and hunting, these pressures led to their extinction.
Dire wolves, once among the most dominant predators in North America, roamed the land until they went extinct more than 10,000 years ago. They gained renewed cultural relevance thanks to HBO’s Game of Thrones, where they served as the iconic companions to the Stark family.
Now, fiction edges closer to reality.
