Gamecocks Climb into Top 10 After Season-Opening Win

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gamecocks surged into the national spotlight Tuesday, earning a top-10 spot in the Associated Press poll following a 24-11 victory over Virginia Tech in Atlanta.
The win marked the Gamecocks’ fourth season-opening victory in five years under head coach Shane Beamer. With several Top 25 teams falling in Week 1, AP voters rewarded South Carolina with a three-spot jump from the preseason rankings, moving the program to No. 10 nationally. It is the first time the Gamecocks have cracked the AP top 10 since the 2014 preseason poll.

South Carolina now sits fourth among SEC teams, trailing only Georgia, LSU and Texas. The ranking also puts the Gamecocks in theoretical College Football Playoff position, slotting them as the final at-large team if the poll mirrored the CFP selection committee’s standings.
The Coaches Poll reflected similar momentum earlier in the day, elevating South Carolina to No. 11. ESPN’s Football Power Index ranks the Gamecocks 10th overall, highlighting the balance of an explosive offense and a defense that limited Virginia Tech to field goals on most of its scoring opportunities.

Numbers Back the Surge
Analytics reinforced South Carolina’s rise. Bill Connelly’s SP+ rankings placed the Gamecocks 12th nationally, with the defense showing the largest improvement. Advanced metrics credited South Carolina’s edge in explosive plays, where the team gained 81% of its yards on just 21% of snaps.
Despite a modest 36% success rate on offense, South Carolina’s 1.7 expected points added per successful play led the SEC in Week 1. Defensively, the Gamecocks forced two interceptions and held Virginia Tech to 1.8 points per scoring opportunity, well below the national average.
Rivalry Contrast: Clemson Stumbles
While South Carolina climbed, archrival Clemson dropped in the rankings after a 17-10 home loss to LSU in one of the weekend’s marquee matchups. The Tigers, ranked No. 4 entering the season, slid to #8 as their offense sputtered. Quarterback Cade Klubnik completed just 19 of 38 passes for 230 yards with one interception, while the running game produced only 31 yards on 20 carries.
Head coach Dabo Swinney acknowledged his offense must improve quickly, pointing to missed opportunities and breakdowns in the passing game. The loss marked Clemson’s most significant season-opening setback in nearly a decade and put pressure on the Tigers as they prepare for Troy this week.
Clemson’s latest loss continued a troubling trend for the Tigers against SEC opponents. Once a program known for punching above its weight in marquee matchups, Clemson has now dropped four straight games to SEC competition dating back to 2022. The Tigers have struggled to match the physicality at the line of scrimmage, managing just 31 rushing yards against LSU on Saturday and averaging fewer than 80 yards on the ground in their last three SEC contests. For a team that built its reputation on dominance in big-stage games, the inability to break through against SEC powerhouses has become a glaring weakness.
Looking Ahead
South Carolina returns home this weekend to host South Carolina State in a nonconference matchup at Williams-Brice Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Saturday on ESPN+. The Gamecocks enter as heavy favorites, with SP+ projecting a 42-point margin and giving Beamer’s squad more than a 99% chance to improve to 2-0.
For South Carolina, the challenge will be building consistency while maintaining its explosive play identity. With Alabama and Clemson sliding in the latest poll, the Gamecocks’ postseason outlook may depend on sustaining that balance in conference play.
