Complicated Greenville County Murder Case Set to Begin Trial
GREENVILLE, S.C.—What is being called one of the most complex murder cases in Greenville County’s history is set to go to trial next week. The case involves a murder victim with alleged dark secrets, an accused killer tied to a prestigious fine arts institution, and a disturbing web of crimes against vulnerable individuals.
The trial stems from events that began more than three years ago on a sunny morning in an upscale Greenville County neighborhood.
The Crime: October 13, 2021
On the morning of October 13, 2021 in Greenville County, Christina Parcell dropped her daughter off at school. By midday, her home had become a crime scene. Security footage captured a person wearing a gray hoodie and carrying a black backpack entering her home. Hours later, Parcell was found stabbed more than 30 times.

Greenville County neighbors expressed shock at the brutal killing. “It’s horrible that it’s so close to where our kids played and went to school,” one resident told local media.
Parcell, 41, was found dead in her home in the Canebrake neighborhood in Greer. According to the coroner, she suffered multiple sharp force injuries. A 911 call from someone who knew Parcell led authorities to the scene. Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis described the crime scene as “very brutal” and “unusual.”

“It was more than obvious that he intended to kill her, and he went over there for that reason,” Lewis said at the time. “Talking about the murder itself, it was very intentional. We don’t know why. We don’t know what the motive really was.”
Lewis confirmed that physical evidence, as well as surveillance video, tied Zachary David Hughes, 29, to the murder. Hughes was arrested on November 3, 2021, and charged with Parcell’s murder. According to the arrest warrant, he used an “edged weapon” to stab the victim multiple times.
The Investigation Expands
Exactly one week after Parcell’s murder, her fiancé, Bradly Post, was arrested, not for her death, but on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and criminal sexual conduct. Investigators found multiple devices in his possession containing child sexual abuse material. Future court records would allege that Parcell may have been involved in producing the material, though she was never charged.

On October 21, just a day after Post’s arrest, John Mello, Parcell’s former partner and the father of her child, was taken into custody by Greenville County for allegedly violating a custody agreement by taking their daughter out of the country. However, a judge later dismissed the charge, ruling that Mello had full custody.
Despite these arrests, it wasn’t until November 3, 2021, nearly a month after Parcell’s murder, that Greenville County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Zachary Hughes as the primary suspect.
Who is Zachary Hughes?
Hughes’ background drew significant attention. Raised in a family that adopted five children from Russia, Hughes turned to music as an outlet and became an accomplished pianist. His talent earned him a scholarship to The Juilliard School, one of the world’s most prestigious fine arts institutions.
Despite his musical prowess, Hughes aspired to a military career. He attended Officer Candidate School for the Marine Corps but later withdrew due to leg injuries. After leaving the Marines, Hughes relocated to Greenville after being invited to perform at a church event for a woman who had acquired a high-quality piano. He remained in the area and pursued a personal goal of memorizing all 32 of Beethoven’s sonatas—600 pages of music. By September 2021, Hughes had achieved this feat, uploading his performances online.
Just three months later, he was in jail, accused of murder.

A Critical Connection
While investigators have not publicly disclosed a clear motive for the killing, a court filing in mid-2022 revealed a key connection between Hughes and Mello. Prosecutors uncovered nearly 2,000 messages exchanged between the two men. One message exchange on the day of Parcell’s murder raised eyebrows:
Mello: “How did the music research go?”
Hughes: “Good, I’ll tell you over the phone.”
Prosecutors believe this exchange could be linked to the crime. Investigators sought a court order to compel Hughes to unlock his phone, noting that a person capable of memorizing hours of complex music should also be able to recall a passcode. Hughes claimed he couldn’t remember it, but law enforcement eventually gained access to the phone without his assistance.
Additional Charges
In September 2023, Hughes and Mello were hit with new charges related to harassment. Investigators alleged that in the months before Parcell’s death, the pair harassed her by distributing explicit photos of her to various people and businesses. Mello’s charges remain pending.
Trial Scheduled to Begin
Hughes’ trial is scheduled to start on January 13, 2025, and is expected to be lengthy due to the complex nature of the case and the significant amount of evidence involved. Hughes is currently being held in the Greenville County Detention Center without bond.
