Clinton, S.C., — The heartbreaking death of 14-year-old Kaden Moses on December 30, 2023, has left his family in Clinton, South Carolina, reeling with grief and searching for answers. Although classified as a homicide by the Laurens County Coroner’s Office, no one has been held accountable for his death. Kaden was found shot in the side of his head with a .243 bolt-action rifle, a tragic end to seemed like an ordinary evening spent playing video games with a friend. No one knew just how horrific it would end on that cold December night in 2023.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) took over the investigation, but the case has now been closed with no one to account for her son’s murder. Correspondence between SLED and Kaden’s mother, Erika Moses, reveals a closed investigation that has yet to provide the family with the information they desperately need. This news agency was the first to report on this exclusive case, we asked the lingering questions, and why justice remains so elusive for Kaden and his loved ones.
What Happened to Kaden Moses?
On or about December 27th, 2023, Kaden and his then-friend, to protect his identity we’ll call him, Henry. Kaden and Henry, we’re having a dispute about something Henry may have said about Kaden’s then-girlfriend, and to protect her identity, we’ll call her, Mae. At this time, Kaden was staying with his father, who was separated from his mother, Erika. As days passed, it appeared that Kaden and Henry made up and Henry was going to go to Kaden’s mother’s house on Saturday December 30th to spend the night.
According to Kaden’s then girlfriend, Mae, she said in her statement to police, “The four of us had been talking to each other off and on during the day and had made plans to meet at Mae’s house the next day, planning a bonfire to celebrate the New Year.” As we attempt to build a timeline of events on the night of Saturday December, 30th, things were rolling with Kaden and Henry at Erika’s house. Mae explains what happened starting at 9:00 PM, “Around 9:00 PM, Kaden and I were on the phone talking, and he decided to go take a shower. I stayed on the phone while he took his shower. When he got out, he told me that Henry had walked outside, so he was going to go check on him. He then said Henry was walking back toward the house from the driveway.”
It’s important to note here, that Kaden was about to turn 15 in January of 2024, and would have been able to get his SC Learner’s Permit to drive. According to Erika, the only other place ammunition for the .243 bolt-action-rifle that Kaden had was in his locked up truck, and her gun safe. The keys to Kaden’s truck were in Erika’s room.
Lastly, Mae mentioned to her mother that when she was on the phone with Kaden. She and Kaden and Kate were all playing an online virtual game called Roblox, and according to Mae, Kaden’s virtual character, never stopped moving until after she heard the gunshot go off. Which means that Kaden was playing the game, and in Roblox you have to play with both hands, then the .243 bolt-action-rifle was fired and the bullet ripped into his head from down and to the left of him.
The time is near 10:55 PM and Kaden’s sister, (Kiely) and her boyfriend were in her room exchanging Christmas gifts, as they hadn’t seen each other over Christmas. Kiely describes what happened next. “We were opening them for a while and then we heard a pop, not loud but kind of like a big piece of furniture hitting the wall. I started laughing because I didn’t think it was anything bad and it made us flinch. We went to go see what the noise was after a little bit, as soon as I opened my door (which has a metal sign on it clanking on my door), Henry walked out the room with his phone in his hand saying Kaden shot himself. I told Henry it’s not something to joke about and then I looked in Kaden’s room and saw him in his chair facing his monitor. I was in shock but I could hear the blood dripping on the carpet,” Kiely stated in her written statement to SLED.
Where Did Henry Go, The Vehicle and Henry’s Clothes Changed?
According to the neighbor, Taffy, she recalls, “So he, (Henry) runs into the car. Yeah. It pulled like almost at the very end of the driveway because I seen it pull up in my peripheral vision.”
In a text to Erika Moses from Mae’s mother, Tammy.
Erika: “I don’t know what Henry had on. T-shirt and shorts, maybe pants.”
Tammy: “I say this because I believe he may have changed clothes which if he did then he wouldn’t have gun powder on his clothes.”
Erika: “What makes you think he changed clothes? Like his parents brought him clothes to change into?”
Tammy: “I remember his sister whom I had never met, come to my car with another girl. They got in my SUV with Mae and Kate and then Henry’s sister got a phone call from her mom. Her mom wanted her to come take off Henry’s pants and give them, (her pants) to Henry, which left his sister in shorts. I think they were clothes that had been left in his car (maybe ball pants).”
Erika: “I never found his shoes.”
Now you have Tammy, the mother of Mae, Kaden’s girlfriend outside of the Moses home, after Kaden Moses was shot. She recalls that in her car, she had Henry’s sister and a friend, Henry’s girlfriend and a friend, and Kaden’s girlfriend. Henry’s sister receives a phone call from Henry’s mother, telling her to take off her pants and give them to Henry. So she leaves Tammy’s vehicle with pants on and comes back to Tammy’s car with shorts on, allegedly she was going to give them to Henry or Henry’s mom for Henry to change into. We interviewed Tammy and she recalls Henry’s sister saying on the phone, “Okay yes, I’ll come change clothes if he needs it.” Someone in Tammy’s SUV asked who that was and Henry’s sister said, “That was my momma.”
If this account by the neighbor and Mae’s mother are accurate, it would appear that Henry may have called his parents, and sister and girlfriend. The sister changes out of her pants, leaves Mae’s mom’s vehicle and allegedly gives the jeans to either Henry or someone in the vehicle in which Henry entered, according to Taffy, the neighbor.
A New Eyewitness Makes Astounding Recall
Another eyewitness at the scene of the homicide has come forward after reading the articles posted by the CC News Network about Kaden Moses. A witness named Julie has now said, she saw one kid get out of Tammy’s car and go to where Henry was, inside the vehicle at the end of the Moses’ driveway. She went on to say that then the vehicle started moving forward (away from the sharp curve) on my side of the street. The two kids then walked along side it up the road. She said it didn’t click in her head until she read your article. She was watching with her husband Jamie, ex husband Neil and her kids.
When we can tie together the statements of the eyewitnesses, Tammy and Julie.
- Tammy and others in her vehicle recall Henry’s sister receiving a phone call in her vehicle. After Henry’s sister got off the phone, she was asked who it was. She responded that it was her mom, and she wanted the daughter to come to her vehicle and give the pants she was wearing to Henry.
- Henry’s sister exits Tammy’s SUV and walks away.
- We now pick up where the new eyewitness, Julie spots Henry’s sister getting out of Tammy’s SUV, and walking towards a vehicle at the end of the Moses driveway where her brother Henry was standing.
- Henry and his sister get into the vehicle after it had moved slowly, away from the Moses home and away from law enforcement.
Possible Charges for Henry, His Sister and Mother is Eyewitnesses are Correct
If the accounts of the family, neighbors, the boyfriend and the girlfriend’s mom are all accurate, including what Henry has said to eyewitnesses, the following may apply to all involved with the killing of Kaden and alleged in helping destroy evidence. But also remember, no one has been charged with any crimes with the homicide of Kaden Moses. If anyone were to be charged, they are to be presumed innocent until the state can prove them guilty in a court of law.
Henry’s Possible Charges
- Murder: South Carolina law defines murder as the unlawful killing of another person with malice aforethought. If the shooting was intentional, the shooter could be charged with murder. In South Carolina, a murder conviction carries a potential penalty of 30 years to life in prison, or even the death penalty in certain circumstances.
- Involuntary manslaughter involves the unintentional killing of another person due to reckless disregard for the safety of others. This could include actions like handling a firearm negligently, drunk driving, or any other reckless conduct that results in someone’s death.
- Tampering with Evidence: Changing clothes to avoid detection of gunpowder residue would likely be considered tampering with evidence. Under South Carolina law, this involves altering, destroying, concealing, or removing evidence with the intent to impair its availability in an investigation or proceeding. This is typically classified as a misdemeanor but can carry additional penalties.
- Obstruction of Justice: By attempting to hide evidence, the shooter could also be charged with obstruction of justice. This charge can apply when someone interferes with the investigation or administration of justice. This can be a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the nature of the interference.
Henry’s Mother and Sister’s Possible Charges
If the mother and sister of the alleged shooter helped him change clothes to hide evidence, as described by two separate eyewitnesses, they could potentially face serious charges for their involvement. In South Carolina, the following charges could apply:
- Accessory After the Fact: This charge applies when someone assists a person who has committed a crime, such as murder or manslaughter, with the intent to help them avoid arrest, prosecution, or conviction. By allegedly helping the shooter change clothes to hide gunpowder residue, the mother and sister could be charged as accessories after the fact to murder. In South Carolina, accessory after the fact to murder is a felony and can result in up to 15 years in prison.
- Tampering with Evidence: The mother and sister could also be charged with tampering with evidence, if they were actively participating in the concealment or destruction of evidence. This act of tampering can be charged as a misdemeanor, but it can add to the legal consequences they face.
- Obstruction of Justice: Assisting in the cover-up by hiding evidence can also lead to charges of obstruction of justice. This charge would be applicable because they are interfering with the investigation by helping to conceal evidence related to the crime.
- Conspiracy: If it can be proven that there was an agreement to help hide the evidence and impede the investigation, they could also face conspiracy charges. Conspiracy in South Carolina is charged when two or more people agree to commit a crime and take some action toward its completion. This charge could be an added layer of legal jeopardy.
With this new eyewitness now coming forward, it puts even more pressure on the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), to reopen this case and interview these eyewitnesses.
Follow CC News Network as we next go to the Kaden Moses home to conduct a ballistic trajectory reconstruction. This process is part of forensic ballistics and is used to establish the path a bullet traveled, helping investigators determine the shooter’s location, the angle of fire, and other critical details about a shooting incident.
The coroner’s report states that Kaden Moses was shot in the lateral left side of the head. The path was through the skin, bone, brain and exited the top right side of his head. Cause of death is a gunshot wound to the head. The manner of death was ruled a homicide. This is signed by Claire E. Rose M.D., medical Examiner, and Michael Ward M.D., chief medical examiner.
Now we know the path the bullet took. We can then reconstruct the bullets path to prove what the Coroner has already said all along. That Kaden’s death was a homicide and there is no way Kaden committed suicide. So who shot Kaden from the floor at an upward angle to Kaden’s head, exiting and entering the adjacent wall at the continued upward angle? CC News Network will show you soon.
