Lancaster County Cracks Down on Gang Violence: 16 Arrested in Connection with String of Shootings
Lancaster, SC – A recent wave of gang-related violence in Lancaster County has culminated in the arrest of 16 individuals, following an extensive multi-agency investigation. The violence, which began with the fatal drive-by shooting of Jelani Jackson on Clinton Avenue on September 4th, spiraled into a series of retaliatory shootings across the area.
Authorities believe Jackson’s murder was gang-motivated, sparking a feud between rival groups. The resulting gun violence affected several neighborhoods, including Palmetto Place Apartments, Shelton Street, Foster Heights Drive, and Converse Street. Property damage was reported in the form of bullet-riddled vehicles, homes, and outbuildings. Additionally, one suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the hand during the spree.
In an effort to curb the escalating violence, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI offered a reward for information leading to arrests. On December 19th, law enforcement agencies launched a coordinated operation involving more than 100 officers from local, state, and federal levels. The effort led to the apprehension of 13 suspects, consisting of 12 males and one female, all believed to be part of a conspiracy driving the violent incidents. A juvenile and an adult female with an outstanding bench warrant were also detained.
The adult suspects now face a variety of serious charges, including:
- Criminal conspiracy
- Discharging a firearm into a dwelling
- Breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature
- Possession of a stolen pistol
- Drug trafficking
Despite the gravity of these offenses, most of the adults have been released on bond, with the exception of two suspects who either remain in custody due to high bond amounts or have been denied bond altogether.
Sheriff Barry Faile praised the diligence of investigators who meticulously linked the suspects to the shootings and executed the complex operation. “We are committed to pursuing anyone involved in gun violence and ensuring they are held accountable. This operation demonstrates our resolve to keep Lancaster County safe,” Faile said.
The investigation remains active, and authorities expect additional arrests and charges to follow as they continue to piece together the full extent of the criminal activity.
