EDGEMOOR, S.C. – Chester County deputies have arrested a couple on drug trafficking charges after uncovering 3.7 pounds of fentanyl, $91,000 in cash, 17 firearms, 87 grams of crack cocaine, and two pounds of marijuana during a raid at a home on Berryhill Road in rural Edgemoor.
Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey called the fentanyl seizure the largest in county history, highlighting the danger posed by the powerful synthetic opioid.
“This amount of fentanyl could have caused countless overdoses in our community,” Dorsey said. “We are committed to fighting the flow of this deadly drug into our county and holding those responsible accountable.”
The seizure comes amid a nationwide fentanyl epidemic, with over 100,000 drug overdose deaths recorded in the U.S. in 2023, according to the CDC. Fentanyl, which is 50 times stronger than heroin, is fueling the crisis, often being mixed into other drugs without users knowing.
Former President Donald Trump has vowed to take aggressive action against the trafficking of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids. In recent campaign speeches, Trump has proposed severe penalties for drug dealers, including the death penalty, and stricter border policies to curb the flow of fentanyl from Mexico into the U.S. His policies aim to dismantle drug cartels and crack down on China, which is believed to be the primary source of fentanyl precursors.
The couple arrested in Edgemoor faces multiple felony charges, including trafficking fentanyl and possession of firearms during a drug-related crime. Authorities are working to determine if the suspects have ties to larger trafficking organizations.
Sheriff Dorsey praised his deputies for their work in securing the arrests and preventing potential mass overdoses in Chester County.
“Every dose of fentanyl we take off the street is a life potentially saved,” Dorsey said. “This fight is far from over.”
Authorities say the investigation remains active, and additional arrests may be forthcoming.
