Luigi Mangione: His Family has Ties to Charleston. He is Accused of Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO
By CC News Network
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old app developer accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has connections to Charleston through his family, adding a new layer of interest to a case already drawing national attention.
Luigi Mangione is accused of fatally shooting Thompson on Dec. 4, 2024, outside a Manhattan hotel. Authorities arrested him days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a multi-state manhunt. As Luigi Mangione faces charges of second-degree murder, details about his family’s ties to Charleston have emerged.

Family’s Charleston Roots
NBC affiliate WCBD reports that Mangione’s parents own a condominium in the historic Cogswell Building in Charleston’s Printers Row neighborhood. The property, purchased in 2014 for $820,000, underscores the family’s connection to the Lowcountry.
Mangione’s sister is also a College of Charleston graduate who worked in art galleries both locally and abroad in Florence, Italy, during her time in college. Additionally, Mangione’s mother, Kathleen “Kathy” Zannino Mangione is a prominent figure in the Charleston community, serving on the board of the Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival in Charleston, and actively participating in cultural events.
These connections add a surprising local dimension to a case that has captivated national audiences.
The Crime
The fatal shooting occurred as Thompson, 50, was en route to an investors’ conference at the New York Hilton Hotel. Surveillance footage shows a masked individual, later identified as Luigi Mangione, approaching Thompson and firing multiple times before fleeing the scene on an e-bike. Thompson was pronounced dead shortly after.
Authorities apprehended Luigi Mangione after an employee at a McDonald’s in Altoona recognized him from news reports. Police found him in possession of a 3D-printed firearm and multiple fake IDs. Forensic analysis and fingerprints linked the weapon to shell casings recovered at the crime scene.
However we caution everyone who reads this, and take what the prosecution or law enforcement is saying with a grain of salt. Everyone in South Carolina is familiar with the Alex Murdaugh case, and law enforcement here was touting guilty as sin when they leaked information about Alex’s t-shirt he wore the night his family was assassinated. The news headlines read, “High-Velocity Impact Spatter Directly Ties Alex Murdaugh To Double Homicide, Sources Say.” These sources gave this false information to Mandy Matney, a reporter who was and is a Murdaugh is guilty, no matter what person. We’ll wait until the evidence is presnted at trial, if there is one for Luigi Mangione.
Possible Motive
Investigators discovered a manifesto in Mangione’s possession expressing disdain for corporate greed and the U.S. healthcare system, themes believed to stem from personal grievances. Mangione suffered a debilitating back injury in 2023, which required surgery and left him in chronic pain. Friends and family noted a change in his behavior during this period, as his frustration with the healthcare industry grew.
The writings suggest his actions were premeditated and motivated by his perception of injustice within the corporate healthcare system.
Legal Proceedings and Reaction
Mangione is resisting extradition to New York, where he faces charges of second-degree murder. Prosecutors are pushing for premeditated first-degree murder charges. Meanwhile, public opinion is split, with some viewing Mangione as a misguided vigilante, while others call for the full weight of the law to be applied.
Many people on social media are starting a trend of “Being with Luigi Mangione, like this one on X.
I had great time with a very good friend of mine named Luigi Mangione and his family from December 3rd (Tuesday) to December 10th (Tuesday) of 2024 at Taj Mahal. I remember him telling me how much he absolutely hates murdering CEOs and he would never do that. pic.twitter.com/aIh9v7rk9X

Adding to the family’s challenges, Mangione’s mother and sister have faced questions about his actions. The family has expressed their disbelief and sorrow over the incident. “We are heartbroken for the Thompson family and remain committed to supporting Luigi through the legal process,” they said in a statement.
Charleston’s Reaction
The family’s ties to Charleston have sparked local interest and concern. “It’s shocking to think that someone connected to our community could be involved in such a high-profile case,” said a resident familiar with the family. Others in the Lowcountry expressed empathy for Mangione’s family, who now find themselves in an unimaginable situation.
What’s Next
As the case unfolds, the legal proceedings will bring further scrutiny to Mangione’s actions, his alleged motivations, and the role of systemic issues in the tragedy. For now, Charleston residents are left grappling with the connections between their community and a case that has national implications.
