MUSC Receives Green Light for New Hospital in Indian Land, Part of $860M Expansion Plan

INDIAN LAND, S.C. — The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has received final approval to move forward with a new hospital in Indian Land, a major healthcare expansion that promises to transform access to medical services in rapidly growing Lancaster County.

The project is part of a broader $860 million capital investment that also includes a new facility in Summerville, S.C. The South Carolina Fiscal Accountability Authority recently authorized borrowing to fund both projects, increasing MUSC’s total debt load to nearly $1.8 billion—more than double its current level. MUSC officials say the expansion is necessary to address pressing healthcare needs in underserved and high-growth communities.

The upcoming MUSC Indian Land hospital is expected to create more than 500 jobs and serve as a major hub for medical care just south of the North Carolina border. Local officials and residents have long called for enhanced healthcare access to match the area’s population and commercial boom. Construction timelines have not yet been finalized.

MUSC is South Carolina’s only publicly owned, integrated academic health sciences center and one of the most prominent healthcare providers in the state.
