Nebraska Father Allegedly Kills Wife, Two Sons Before Taking Own Life on Son’s Graduation Day

DAWSON COUNTY, Neb. — Authorities in Nebraska are investigating a suspected murder-suicide where the father allegedly kills wife and two sons on the same day one of the victims was set to graduate high school.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, 42-year-old Jeremy Koch is believed to have fatally stabbed his wife, Bailey Koch, 41, and their two sons — Hudson Koch, 18, and Asher Koch, 16 — before killing himself. Deputies with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office discovered all four deceased inside the family’s home on the morning of May 10 around 9:45 a.m. A knife was recovered at the scene.

The violent deaths occurred just hours before Hudson was scheduled to graduate from Cozad High School.

At the school’s commencement ceremony later that day, Cozad Superintendent Dan Endorf addressed the tragedy before the packed gymnasium.

“As you know, our community and our senior class experienced a tragedy within the past few hours,” Endorf said. “The bittersweet emotions felt by the senior class on their graduation day, and throughout this entire gymnasium for that matter, cannot be concealed in this moment… While our Haymaker pride is being tested at this moment, let’s all do our very best within the next hour to celebrate the 13-year journey that our graduates are completing today.”

The Dawson County Attorney has ordered autopsies for all four victims. The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the ongoing homicide investigation.

A History of Struggles

In a public Facebook post, Bailey’s parents, Lane and Peg Kugler, revealed that Jeremy Koch had a long history of mental health issues, including multiple suicide attempts dating back to at least 2009.

Bailey Koch was a former contributor to the parenting website Her View From Home and had created a Facebook page to raise awareness about mental illness. She often wrote candidly about her family’s struggles with mental health in hopes of reducing stigma and offering support to others.

In a series of recent posts, Bailey described her husband’s declining condition and called for greater awareness of what she called a “society’s mental health crisis.”

According to a post dated May 3, Bailey said Jeremy had survived at least four suicide attempts and that in March 2025, she woke to find him standing over her with a knife, saying, “Something is wrong.” She said she de-escalated the situation and convinced him to seek professional help.

She also shared that his condition deteriorated further after ending electroconvulsive therapy treatments earlier this year. “Mental illness is taking my husband from me,” she wrote. “And I’m begging you to open your eyes and see the reality.”

Community in Mourning

As the investigation continues, the Cozad community and surrounding Dawson County remain in mourning. School officials, mental health advocates, and local residents are grappling with the devastating loss.

“We’re not just talking about a tragedy — we’re talking about a system that failed,” said one family friend, who asked not to be named. “Bailey tried to sound the alarm. She was fighting for all of them.”
