Former Spartanburg County Deputy Charged with Misconduct and Confidential Information Disclosure
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged a former Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office deputy with misconduct in office and improper disclosure of confidential information. Avery Dean Hand, 29, was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center on Friday, December 6, 2024, according to a release from SLED.

The charges stem from allegations of Hand’s involvement in misusing his position as a deputy to access and disclose confidential information related to an ongoing homicide investigation in March 2023.
Details of the Allegations
According to arrest warrants and affidavits, Hand, while in uniform and driving a patrol vehicle, accessed the secure law enforcement database at a hotel parking lot. He reviewed sensitive case files, including detailed records and descriptions of a suspect’s appearance. He allegedly shared this information with unauthorized individuals, breaching his official duties.
The misconduct reportedly occurred during a meeting Hand had at the Comfort Suites in Spartanburg County, where he provided case details to others connected to the investigation. Hand’s actions were documented as failing to uphold the ethical responsibilities required of his position, leading to the current charges.
Prosecution and Next Steps
SLED stated that the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office would handle the prosecution of the case. Hand now faces legal consequences for breaching both internal protocols and public trust.
“The integrity of our law enforcement officers is paramount,” a SLED representative noted. “Any breach of that integrity undermines public trust and the ability of law enforcement to operate effectively.”
Background of the Case
The investigation revealed that Hand accessed the confidential records through the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office database. He reportedly read aloud critical information and admitted to receiving phone calls related to the homicide investigation, which was stored in a restricted management system.
Hand is charged with common law misconduct in office and improper disclosure of confidential information, offenses that carry significant penalties under South Carolina law.
Upcoming Proceedings
As of this writing, no additional details regarding court dates or bond conditions have been released. SLED has confirmed that further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
