GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is currently investigating two separate officer-involved shootings that occurred in Greenville and Colleton counties within the past month.
Greenville County Incident
The most recent incident took place early Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, in Greenville County. Deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call on Monday evening, Nov. 4, involving a domestic disturbance at a residence in Greer, S.C. The call reportedly involved an armed man, prompting the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team to assist in negotiations.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the armed man exited the home, resulting in an exchange of gunfire with deputies, who ultimately shot him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and no deputies were injured. The identity of the deceased is pending notification by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.

Colleton County Incident
On Oct. 15, 2024, officers from the Walterboro Police Department and deputies from the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance in the parking lot of a Best Western hotel and Ruby Tuesday restaurant off Sniders Highway in Walterboro, S.C. During the encounter, a Colleton County deputy confronted a man armed with a knife. The deputy shot the man, who was identified by the Colleton County Coroner’s Office as 32-year-old John Joseph Horan V. Horan died at the scene, and no law enforcement officers were injured.

SLED’s Role and Investigation Process
At the request of the Greenville County and Colleton County sheriff’s offices, SLED is conducting independent investigations into both incidents. SLED’s investigations will involve interviews with all potential witnesses, collection of relevant evidence, and forensic testing as needed. Findings from both cases will be compiled into case file reports to be submitted to prosecutors.
The Greenville County incident marks the 37th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year and the fifth involving the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. The Colleton County incident, which occurred in mid-October, was the state’s 36th officer-involved shooting of 2024 and the first involving the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.
As both investigations are ongoing, SLED has stated that no further details are available at this time.
