SLED Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Greenville County
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, in Greenville County.
According to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO), deputies were dispatched to a residence on Mountain Lake Lane in Travelers Rest around 8 p.m. following a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance involving a suicidal individual. Upon arrival, a GCSO deputy encountered an armed man outside the home, later identified by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office as 66-year-old Joseph Dominic Mason.
During the encounter, Mason was shot by the deputy. He was transported to Prisma Health Greenville, where he was pronounced dead. No deputies or other individuals were injured in the incident. A firearm was reportedly recovered at the scene.
SLED was called to conduct an independent investigation, a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. “As part of the investigation, SLED agents will interview witnesses, collect relevant evidence, and conduct forensic testing where necessary,” a SLED spokesperson said. A report summarizing the findings will be submitted to prosecutors for review. No further details have been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
This marks the 45th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2024 and the seventh involving the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office this year. In comparison, the state recorded 43 officer-involved shootings in 2023, with four incidents involving GCSO deputies.
Per GCSO policy, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Additionally, GCSO announced that a Critical Incident Community Briefing video related to the case will be published on its official YouTube channel on Feb. 11, 2025, at 8 a.m.
Greenville County officials stated that any further details would be provided by SLED as the investigation progresses.
