COLUBMIA, S.C., — As South Carolina recovers from the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) has stepped up to assist with cleanup efforts, working alongside Dominion Energy to help clear roads and restore access to hard-hit communities.
Joel Anderson, the Deputy Director of Operations for SCDC, praised the department’s efforts, highlighting the dedication of both staff and inmates in volunteering to aid their fellow South Carolinians. “We are utilizing 25 staff members and 20 inmates who all volunteered. They are clearing roads for families to get to family,” said Anderson. “These men and women are working tirelessly to restore access and help their communities rebuild after such a devastating storm.” Deputy Director Anderson leads operations for security, maintenance and food service for all of South Carolina’s 21 prisons.
The collaborative effort between SCDC and Dominion Energy has been vital in tackling the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. In addition to clearing debris, the teams are ensuring that power lines are safe and functional, helping expedite restoration efforts across the region.
Dominion Energy representatives have expressed their gratitude for the partnership, emphasizing how the combined manpower is making a significant difference in accelerating recovery efforts. Together, these teams are clearing critical pathways, allowing families to reconnect and communities to begin rebuilding their lives.
The volunteers’ work is focused on areas that were left completely inaccessible due to fallen trees and downed power lines, as both organizations strive to ensure the fastest possible recovery for those affected. The spirit of cooperation and volunteerism is shining through as South Carolina comes together in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
