The NFL has a new head coach with roots in South Carolina. Charleston native Ben Johnson was recently named the head coach of the Chicago Bears, capping an impressive rise through the coaching ranks. Johnson, born in Charleston on May 11, 1986, is poised to bring his offensive expertise to one of the league’s most storied franchises.
From Charleston to Chapel Hill
Johnson’s journey to the NFL began in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was born and spent his early years. He later moved to Asheville, North Carolina, where he attended A.C. Reynolds High School, leading the team to a North Carolina 4-A state championship as a junior and earning conference player of the year honors as a senior. Academically gifted, Johnson graduated in the top five of his class.
He walked on as a quarterback for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2004, serving as a reserve behind T.J. Yates. Johnson earned degrees in mathematics and computer science in 2008, a testament to his analytical mindset, which would later influence his coaching style.
A Fast Rise in the Coaching World
Johnson’s coaching career began at Boston College, where he served as a graduate assistant in 2009 before being promoted to tight ends coach in 2011. His NFL journey started in 2012 when the Miami Dolphins hired him as an offensive assistant. Over seven seasons, Johnson worked his way up, coaching quarterbacks, tight ends, and wide receivers under various head coaches.
In 2019, Johnson joined the Detroit Lions as an offensive quality control coach. His keen offensive mind quickly caught the attention of team leadership, and he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2022. During his tenure, the Lions consistently ranked among the NFL’s top offenses, including finishing as the #1 offense in 2024, scoring a franchise-record 33.2 points per game.
A Historic 2024 Season
Johnson’s 2024 season with the Lions was one for the record books. His offense set multiple NFL records, including the most 40-point games without turnovers (five) and becoming the first team in history to have two wide receivers and two running backs each surpass 1,000 scrimmage yards in a single season. Under his leadership, the Lions advanced to the NFC Championship Game, showcasing Johnson’s ability to elevate his team to new heights.

Taking the Helm in Chicago
On January 21, 2025, Johnson was announced as the head coach of the Chicago Bears, marking the next chapter in his remarkable career. He brings with him a wealth of experience and a reputation for innovative offensive schemes, honed under mentors such as Adam Gase, Darrell Bevell, and Clyde Christensen. Johnson’s ability to develop players and craft high-scoring offenses will be central to his efforts to revitalize the Bears.

South Carolina Pride
While Johnson’s career has taken him across the country, his roots in South Carolina remain an integral part of his story. Charleston natives and South Carolinians alike can take pride in seeing one of their own rise to the pinnacle of professional football.
As the 2025 NFL season approaches, all eyes will be on Johnson as he takes the reins of the Bears, bringing with him the work ethic and determination instilled during his formative years in the Palmetto State.
