South Carolina Towns Reeling After Wave of Gun Violence and Arrests
By James Seidel | CC News Network
SOUTH CAROLINA — A wave of gun violence rocked several towns across South Carolina over the past week, leaving communities shaken and authorities grappling with investigations in Myrtle Beach, Greenville, Rock Hill, Walterboro, Columbia, and Conway. The incidents span from mass shootings and child victims to fatal domestic confrontations, highlighting the growing toll of violent crime statewide.
12 Shot, 1 Killed in Myrtle Beach Tourist District
In the heart of Myrtle Beach’s tourist corridor, 11 people were injured and one person was killed late Saturday night, April 26. Officers responded to a disturbance near North Ocean Boulevard where someone began firing a weapon. A Myrtle Beach police officer, reacting to the immediate threat, fatally shot 18-year-old Jerrius Davis, according to Horry County Coroner Tamara Willard.
Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune praised the officer’s swift action, stating, “Our officer saw what happened… and in my opinion, saved lives.” The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the incident.
5-Year-Old Killed in Greenville County Shootout
In Greenville County, five-year-old Brite Shalom Acoy was killed and her twin sibling critically injured in a shooting at Belle Meade Apartments. Authorities say two groups exchanged gunfire, striking the twins and an 18-year-old.
Deputies arrested Shawnteza La Shay Sherman, 31, and charged her with murder, attempted murder, and criminal conspiracy. Two juveniles, including a 16-year-old, were also arrested. Investigators believe the shooting may be gang-related.

Murder Charge Filed in Walterboro Domestic Shooting
In Walterboro, police arrested Michelle Gladys Bingley, 41, and charged her with murder after a 56-year-old woman was fatally shot on Grace Street. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the victim died shortly after arriving at Colleton Medical Center. Police tracked Bingley down on Tuesday. The investigation is ongoing.
Suspect Wanted in Conway Murder
In Conway, police are seeking 29-year-old Davion “Chino” Hunt in connection to the April 19 shooting death of V’ron Gibbs on Grainger Road. Hunt is considered armed and dangerous. Arrest warrants have been issued for murder, and authorities are urging the public not to approach him.
Shooting Near USC in Columbia Leads to Arrest
In Columbia, a man was shot near the University of South Carolina campus Sunday night. The victim sustained a non-life-threatening injury. Police later arrested Daniel A. Wise, 27, and charged him with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Investigators believe Wise and the victim, who were acquaintances, were arguing before the shooting occurred. No USC students were involved, officials said.
Arson Attempt and Attempted Murder in Rock Hill
Meanwhile in Rock Hill, Johntavis Antwan Miller, 36, was charged with second-degree arson and three counts of attempted murder. Authorities say Miller set fire to a pile of clothing inside a home on East Black Street following a domestic argument, igniting a house fire while three people were inside. One person sustained injuries. Police say the fire could have had deadlier consequences if not quickly extinguished.
A Growing Pattern of Violence
These latest incidents represent a troubling surge in violent crime across South Carolina. From tourist areas and university towns to suburban neighborhoods, shootings and violent acts are increasingly cutting across demographic and geographic lines. Community leaders and law enforcement officials continue to plead for public cooperation and vigilance.
Anyone with information on any of these cases is encouraged to contact local authorities or submit anonymous tips through Crimestoppers or the relevant police department hotlines.
