Suspicious Death on Cypress Street in Columbia Now Investigated as Homicide, Police Say
By James Seidel | CC News Network
COLUMBIA, S.C. — A suspicious death reported early Saturday morning on Cypress Street is now being investigated as a homicide, following autopsy results provided by the Richland County Coroner’s Office, according to Columbia Police.
The victim, an adult female, was found deceased inside a residence in the 2700 block of Cypress Street, located in a neighborhood described by residents as a quiet area occupied by students and longtime locals. Crime scene investigators processed the home for evidence throughout the weekend.
Suspicious Death
Multiple sources have told the CC News Network that the victim and her ex-boyfriend contemplating whether or not she should visit, but she came anyway as her ex is about to graduate from the University of South Carolina and move back to Virginia in the next few weeks. While authorities have not publicly released the victim’s identity, sources close to the case tell CC News Network that the ex-boyfriend, is reportedly affiliated with the Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity.
The victim is believed to be a former student at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) in Charlotte and originally from Waxhaw, North Carolina. The victim and the ex-boyfriend met in Columbia while she was on a visit with a girlfriend who attends the university.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the ex-boyfriend’s home may have been broken into, with keys stolen and a truck later discovered two hours away from the property. Police have not commented on those claims. The truck apparently belonged to the roommate of the ex-boyfriend.
Major cities that are located 2 hours away from Columbia are Charlotte, NC, to Greenville, SC, Charleston, or near Wrens, GA.
Friends told CC News Network they had tried to contact the woman in the hours leading up to the discovery, but she had not responded, raising early concerns about her wellbeing.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office continues to assist with the investigation. Columbia Police have stated that a news conference is being planned and will be announced once details are finalized. No further information will be released at this time.
Authorities are urging the public to monitor official social platforms for updates.
Although the manner of the suspicious death has not been released, a recent wave in shootings and violent encounters underscores a disturbing pattern of rising gun violence across South Carolina, where both urban centers and small towns have been rattled by deadly force.
From children caught in crossfire to domestic homicides and public shootouts, the state is grappling with the human toll of firearm accessibility, strained law enforcement resources, and deepening community unrest. South Carolina consistently ranks among the top ten states for gun deaths per capita, and with each passing week, that grim statistic feels less abstract. For many residents, what once seemed like isolated tragedies now reflects a broader crisis that is claiming lives, fracturing neighborhoods, and fueling urgent calls for accountability and reform.
