Tyson MacDonald Death: Father Fined in Connection to Teen’s Manslaughter Case in Georgetown, Canada
GEORGETOWN, P.E.I. (CC News Network) — The father of a teenager who pleaded guilty to the 2023 killing of 17-year-old Tyson MacDonald has only been fined $750 and handed a 10-year firearms prohibition after admitting to unsafe storage of a firearm in a Canadian court.
The 61-year-old man, whose name cannot be released to protect the identity of his son under Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared in Georgetown Provincial Court.
The man’s son, 17 at the time of the crime, was sentenced in November to two years in custody for manslaughter and interfering with human remains in connection with MacDonald’s death. According to court records, Tyson MacDonald, also 17, was shot in the face in December 2023 after the teen pointed a loaded shotgun at him and pulled the trigger. The firearm had been left unsecured near the door of the accused’s home.
Tyson MacDonald’s body was found in Kings County after a six-day search. The teenager responsible for the killing, whose name is also protected by law, later pleaded guilty to manslaughter, claiming the shooting was accidental.
If this article feels reminiscent of the Kaden Moses story, it’s because it does. I feel the same way. Although Kaden had his ammunition locked up, unlock this story.

Firearm Storage and Sentencing
The father’s sentencing follows a joint recommendation by the Crown and defense. Two other charges related to the unsafe storage of firearms and ammunition were stayed.
“This whole undertaking has been very hard on the community and also very hard on him and his family,” defense lawyer Chris Montigny said. “[This is] a sentence very appropriate in these circumstances.”
Shooting someone in the face, killing them, and then hiding their body in Canada apparently only gets you 2 years in a Canadian prison. Very strange.
During the hearing, the court heard that police found an unsecured shotgun in the back of a pickup truck while executing a search warrant at the man’s property on Dec. 18, 2023. Although other weapons were secured in a locked gun safe, the Crown emphasized the father’s ultimate responsibility for firearms on the property.
“What we’re dealing with is a charge of unsafe storage of a weapon. There’s no basis … that he was party to another offense,” Judge Nancy Orr stated. “We’re all quite aware of the fact there were other consequences that come out of this matter that were quite serious. But I have to deal with [the father] with respect to an unsafe storage charge.”
Frustration from Tyson’s Family
MacDonald’s family, who attended the hearing, expressed frustration with the sentence, shaking their heads as it was handed down. Outside the courtroom, family friend Rodney Noseworthy shared their disappointment.
“The sentence, what he got, is not right,” Noseworthy said. “If that gun wasn’t there, if it was safely locked up, that young boy would still be alive right now, and with his family for Christmas. … There should be time in custody, but there’s not.”
The Tyson MacDonald family remembers Tyson as a carefree, sports-loving teenager. For them, the loss remains fresh, and the lack of harsher consequences for the father adds to their anguish.
Calls for Accountability
A source close to the family reached out to CC News Network, urging coverage of MacDonald’s story: “Tyson was shot by one of his best friends when they were both 17. They moved his body twice, and now he just pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He says it was an accident, but the family knows it’s not.”
As MacDonald’s family continues to grieve, this case raises broader questions about firearm safety, legal accountability, and the lasting impact on communities devastated by preventable tragedies.
