The Tale of Two States: Washington and South Carolina Attorneys General React to Trump’s Win
As the dust settles on the 2024 election, the responses from Washington State and South Carolina reflect starkly different approaches in handling President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration. While Washington State prepares for a defensive legal stance, South Carolina’s Attorney General Alan Wilson embraces Trump’s victory with optimism for conservative governance.
In Washington, outgoing Attorney General Bob Ferguson and his successor, AG-elect Nick Brown, are preparing for a potential surge of legal battles. Ferguson, who is transitioning to his new role as governor, stressed his office’s readiness for any federal challenges under Trump, stating, “We will be prepared for whatever comes…and make sure that when there is an illegal action, we will look very closely to see if we can bring a case.” Ferguson has a track record of success, citing 55 successful challenges against Trump’s first administration. Ferguson and Brown have spent months preparing, analyzing Trump’s proposed policies, and even reviewing the conservative policy roadmap, “Project 2025.”
Brown, the AG-elect, is equally committed to protecting Washingtonians, pledging to enforce state rights without “fear of retribution” from federal forces. In addition to legal preparations, Brown emphasizes fortifying state policies on environmental and civil rights protections to safeguard residents from federal overreach.
Meanwhile, South Carolina’s Attorney General Alan Wilson is celebrating Trump’s victory. Wilson joined a local radio show, voicing excitement but also caution, acknowledging expected “backlash” against Trump’s administration. Wilson’s perspective focuses on the potential for strong conservative governance, particularly with Republicans holding the U.S. House. “The question is, will Republicans actually govern with a conservative philosophy…or squander the opportunity?” Wilson noted. Unlike Ferguson and Brown, Wilson expresses no concern over federal policy challenges, focusing instead on unity within the GOP.
Project 2025 is a conservative policy agenda developed by think tanks and political organizations with the aim of influencing the policies of the next Republican administration. The document, crafted by the Heritage Foundation and other conservative groups, outlines a roadmap for sweeping changes across federal agencies, aiming to reshape government operations in line with conservative values. Key provisions within Project 2025 include rolling back environmental protections, limiting access to reproductive healthcare, and scaling back civil rights enforcement in areas like gender and LGBTQ+ protections. The agenda also proposes curtailing government oversight in education, healthcare, and social services, favoring states’ rights over federal intervention. Critics argue that if implemented, Project 2025 could undermine essential rights and protections, particularly for marginalized communities, while weakening safeguards designed to protect public health, civil liberties, and the environment.
This “tale of two states” highlights how political leanings shape the priorities and actions of each Attorney General. While Washington is poised for defensive legal action to counter anticipated federal policies, South Carolina views Trump’s win as a renewed chance for conservative legislative progress. As time progresses, will the Trump administration enact Project 2025? Time will tell. What we do know is that the role of an Attorney General is to protect the public’s interest, which may include advocacy for civil rights and public health. What will all 50 AG’s do if their constituent’s civil rights and healthcare rights are stripped by Washington D.C.?
