MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A former Myrtle Beach councilman is facing legal trouble after allegedly leaving the scene of a hit-and-run while possibly under the influence.
William Wayne Gray, who served four terms on the Myrtle Beach City Council and has been involved with the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce for more than two decades, was arrested by the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) on Nov. 20.
According to SCHP, Wayne Gray, 56, rear-ended another vehicle and fled the scene. Troopers were called to the Marina Inn Hotel around 9:23 p.m., where Myrtle Beach police informed them of Gray’s involvement in a crash at a different location.
Police said the incident occurred at 38th Avenue North and Big Block Road. The victim reported that Gray struck their vehicle and drove away. They attempted to follow Gray’s car, urging him to stop, but he allegedly refused until pulling into the hotel parking lot.
Troopers noted in their report that they “immediately smelled the alcoholic beverage on his breath” and observed that Wayne Gray’s eyes were “bloodshot and watery.” Initially unresponsive to their questions, Gray eventually admitted to drinking four beers between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. When asked to rate his level of intoxication on a scale of 1 to 10, Gray reportedly claimed he was a “2.”
When asked to perform a field sobriety test, Gray refused, leading to his arrest. He was transported to the Myrtle Beach Jail, where he also refused a blood alcohol test.
Wayne Gray was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on charges of driving under the influence and hit-and-run involving an attended vehicle. He has since been released.
