Retrial for Michael Colucci Delayed Again
The retrial for Michael Colucci, a former Summerville jeweler accused of killing his wife, Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci, in 2015, has been postponed. The trial was initially set to begin this year with jury selection, but scheduling conflicts with the judge and her staff during the trial’s expected second week led to the delay.
State prosecutors indicated a potential start date in June 2024, though that has come and gone. This follows a mistrial in December 2018, where jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict after deliberating for two days.

Case Background
Berkeley County deputies found Sara Lynn’s body on May 20, 2015, outside the couple’s jewelry store on North Main Street in Summerville. Colucci claimed his wife died by suicide, alleging she hung herself with a garden hose. However, medical evidence and details from the scene contradicted his account.
Sara Lynn was found on a concrete slab near a chain-link fence, a black garden hose wrapped around her neck. She had grooved wounds on her neck, scrapes on her knees and feet, and a toxicology report showed cocaine, Xanax, and a blood alcohol content of 0.23 in her system.
Michael Colucci claims that his wife, Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci, died by suicide. According to Colucci, on the afternoon of May 20, 2015, the couple stopped by their jewelry store on North Main Street in Summerville so that Sara could use the bathroom. He stated that he remained in their Toyota Prius, parked about 20 feet away from the store, while she exited the vehicle.
Michael Colucci alleges that while he stayed in the car, Sara hung herself with a garden hose tied to a nearby chain-link fence. He says that when he discovered her body, she was unresponsive, prompting him to call 9-1-1. Audio from the emergency call captured Colucci pleading, “Oh my God. C’mon, Sara. Please baby,” and telling dispatchers that her body had turned “purple.”
However, Colucci’s narrative about the timeline and events has shifted. At one point, he claimed that Sara had accidentally tripped and fallen into the garden hose while squeezing between the fence and the building. Additionally, his explanations about how long he remained in the car before discovering her body have varied.
Colucci has consistently denied any involvement in his wife’s death, maintaining that it was a tragic suicide rather than a case of foul play.
Prosecutors argue the evidence points to a violent struggle. A probable cause affidavit asserts that Sara Lynn’s injuries were inconsistent with strangulation by a garden hose, instead pointing to manual strangulation.
Legal Timeline
Michael Colucci was arrested by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division in May 2016 after Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis requested further investigation. He faces a potential sentence of 30 years to life in prison if convicted.
His first trial began in late November 2018 and ended in a mistrial on December 7, after jurors were unable to agree on a verdict. They were reportedly divided over whether Colucci was guilty of voluntary manslaughter or not guilty altogether.
We are now approaching 9 years since Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci’s death, and we are no where closer to an answer as to what happened than we were 9 years ago. Do they have enough evidence to have a jury find Michael Colucci guilty beyond a reasonable doubt?

Looking Ahead
As of now, no new trial date has been finalized. The postponement marks another delay in a case that has spanned nearly a decade, leaving unresolved questions about the circumstances of Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci’s death.
