Cold Case: Who Killed 15-Year-Old Erica Eaddy? Richland County Investigators Renew Efforts to Solve 2004 Murder
By James Seidel | CC News Network
COLUMBIA, S.C. — More than 20 years have passed since 15-year-old Silene “Erica” Eaddy was found beaten and burned to death in Lower Richland. Yet, her killer remains unknown.
Now, Richland County investigators are reviving the case, hoping a new lead could finally bring justice for Erica.
🚨 “We really and truly need the community’s help,” said Dottie Cronise, a cold case investigator with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
For years, authorities have chased nearly 100 tips, but none have led to an arrest. Investigators believe one key detail could break the case wide open.

A Gruesome Discovery
On April 17, 2004, the Columbia-Richland Fire Department responded to a brush fire near the intersection of Pincushion and Montgomery roads.
As firefighters doused the flames, they found something far more horrifying—Erica’s body, severely burned.
🚒 What started as a routine fire call quickly turned into a murder investigation.
The Final Hours: Where Was Erica Before She Died?
Investigators reconstructed Erica’s movements in the days leading up to her violent death:
📌 She had been reported missing earlier that week.
📌 She returned home briefly but left again.
📌 A neighbor saw her walking away from her home.
📌 Hours later, her body was found burned in the woods.
👀 The timeline has a major gap: Investigators do not know where Erica was or who she was with in the hours before she was murdered.
“We’ve got a period of hours there on Friday that are unaccounted for,” Cronise said.
A Troubled Childhood and a Life Cut Short
Erica’s early years were marked by hardship.
- She spent her first years in foster care before being adopted at age three.
- She grew close to her adoptive father, but he died when she was eight.
- She struggled with school and home life, issues that investigators believe stemmed from her father’s death.
🚨 Her mother fought for justice, but she passed away in 2020, leaving investigators as Erica’s last advocates.
The Crime Scene That Still Haunts Investigators
Cronise has spent years studying the case, poring over crime scene photos that still haunt her.
📝 One image stands out—Erica laying on the ground, her body positioned as if she was trying to crawl away.
“She is trying so hard to just crawl away from where she is and eventually just succumbs,” Cronise recalled.
⚠ Investigators believe Erica fought for her life. But who was she trying to escape from?
